HCDC’s Helping Hands

August 4th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

At Hampton Country Day Camp, our campers do more than just have fun – They get involved in giving back to the community that they enjoy so much summer after summer through our camp’s Helping Hands Program.

This summer, our campers had the opportunity to participate in making other children’s lives better by bringing in canned and packaged food from home for the East Hampton Food Pantry.  The Food Pantry then distributes the food to needy families on the East End, including more than 1,000 children.  (Click HERE to read an article that was recently written in the East Hampton Star about our wonderful program and our even more wonderful campers!)

Our campers also took part in helping to fund camperships to attend Morry’s Camp.  Morry’s Camp is a unique four-week program which guarantees four summers of camp to under-privileged children who keep up with their school work and are positive role models in their community.

We’ve Been Keeping Busy This Summer!

July 28th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

Here we are mid-way through Summer 2011, and it has been amazing!  We’ve been keeping so busy here at Hampton Country Day Camp!

So many special activities have been taking place!  Our Mad Science Show which amazed everyone, the puppet show kept us laughing and a petting zoo visited us at camp – we had so much fun feeding the animals!

For Spirit Day, campers participated in so many events such as Jump the River, “Elves, Giants and Wizards” and Pin Guard, while our Kindergarteners did Human Bowling and a Treasure Hunt.  We can’t forget our amazing campers in our “Show Time Club”  that put on a musical review that was spectacular – some real serious talent here at HCDC!!!

All in all a great summer is happening here at Hampton Country Day Camp with life long memories and friendships being made every day!

Final Checklist

June 23rd, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.
  • HCDC t-shirts…  Check!
  • Bathing suit…  Check!
  • Sun Screen… Check!
  • Water Shoes… Check!

What am I forgetting?!?  Ugh….. Yes, the panic of “What am I forgetting?” settles in as you ready your child for camp while you go over all the various things that he or she will need this summer.

But I can tell you that probably the most important thing you can pack for your child is a sense of confidence and reassurance that your child will have an amazing time while at camp this summer.  Remind them that although you will not be there during the day, Dave, Doris, Jane and the rest of the HCDC team of counselors, group leaders & support staff will be there for them and that they are not alone.

Camp will provide your child with the added self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience that comes from doing things that sometimes takes them out of their comfort zone. You can’t over-estimate the benefit for a child that comes from getting through a challenge without mom or dad.  Dave, Doris, Jane and the rest of the HCDC team are there to help them to do just that, and to do it successfully!

So, as you go over your list of various camp necessities and pack them up in your child’s camp backpack, don’t forget to pack your child up with a bit of “can do” attitude and a dose of positive spirit!  The positive changes in your child of having spent a summer of fun and adventure, and making new friends, will make it clear – It was all well worth it!

TEEN Hampton 2011

June 9th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

We are very excited as we enter our second year as directors of Teen Hampton. We have been communicating with our staff throughout the year to ensure that we bring our teens another summer of unique, exciting, and fun filled summer activities.

This summer our special theme days will include Hawaiian Day, Blue/Gold day which again will include an Apache Relay, and a ‘60’s day. Our off campus trips will include spectacular ventures to Laser Kingdom, Country Fair Park (with unlimited go-karts! A favorite of everyone!), Survivor on the Beach, and Splish-Splash.

Our late nights will give our teens the opportunity to stay with us after the program normally ends for an evening of special events such as night-time swimming and BBQ dinners. We are pleased to note that our new chef this year is a whiz at BBQ’ing!!!

Our staff is already busy planning for some ‘reality show’ activities, which will include Top Chef and Project Runway, so be prepared!

Our music and dance specialists will again work with our teens so that they will be able to demonstrate the skills that they have learned throughout the summer AND we have added yoga and Zumba to our dance and fitness programs.

As part of our program we also encourage our teens the value of “giving back” and assisting others.  So this summer, we will again participate in a local food drive and use our skills, with the supervision of our staff, to build several booths to be used at our sister camp’s Carnival. Our teens will also have the opportunity to work at these booths during the carnival and present a positive role model image for the younger campers at HCDC.

We look forward to seeing you all in just 18 days!

Teen Hampton is for Me!

June 7th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

Yep – Teen Hampton is definitely for me! I’m Ethan and I’m 15 years old and I love Teen Hampton! So I figured I’d tell you a little bit about me and the camp.

I like Teen Hampton more than any other camp I went to because I can choose what I want to do. Especially when you get to be my age, who wants to be told what to do? (Okay, well sometimes it’s okay…) but at Teen Hampton we don’t get “assigned” what we have to do, but rather we have a “choice” in what we want to do.

Last summer I loved the trip where we went to Splish-Splash and also when we went sailing. It was AMAZING! I also went golfing every week with the camp golf program and improved my skills. (Bethpage Black Course – Here I come!)

One of my favorite memories from last summer was when we made homemade pizza at an after camp evening activity with Rich, the Art Specialist. We made the “Meat Lovers” pizza and it tasted great!

Some of my favorite activities at Teen Hampton were videography and band. I participated in both every day. I also made a short video and learned how to play the drums (I had never played the drums before), BUT because I was able to learn how to play, I became the drummer for a band at a concert and we performed at Teen Hampton in front of a live audience! It was awesome!

I am really looking forward to this summer (I really can’t wait!) where I can enhance my drumming skills and play lots of golf!

Open House

June 2nd, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

This past weekend Hampton Country Day Camp was filled with the laughter of children! The weather was spectacular and the smiles on everyone’s faces just made the day that much brighter!

Campers and parents enjoyed so many activities – arts & crafts where we made picture frames, matches of tennis and games of soccer.  We unveiled our brand new STARFISH Village and campers got to play in our beautiful sun-screened playground!  After everyone enjoyed snacks and an array of fresh fruit, we gave tours of the camp grounds and families then had the opportunity to meet our spectacular Leadership Staff.

In case you missed out on this great event, feel free to stop by our next Open House on Saturday, June 11th from 11am to 3pm!  Hope to see you there!  Only 26 more days until camp starts!

Camp Cheat Sheet

May 26th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

For all of our new incoming campers (and for those who want to start getting back into that good ‘ol camp spirit!), we thought we’d jot down a few camp terms, along with their definitions, to help get you started so that when you set foot on HCDC grounds in 33 days, you’ll be off and running!

CLUB PROGRAM - Elective Program that allows our upper campers to choose a favorite activity for a full hour each day.  These activities run on two week cycles.

FUZZIES - Wonderfully whimsical little pompoms given to campers for demonstrating STARFISH.

GAGA - A fun and spirited game, played with a soft rubber ball in a turf covered enclosed GaGa court.

The “NOOK” – Cozy air conditioned area for our Stepping Stones to relax read and quiet play.

STARFISHOur values program: Sportsmanship, Tolerance, Appreciation, Respect, Friendship, Integrity, Sensitivity and Helpfulness.

STARFISH CEREMONY – Friday morning all camp assembly to celebrate the spirit of HCDC and to recognize campers who have demonstrated STARFISH values.

STARFISH VILLAGE - Our “Main Street” in camp which includes a Firehouse, Schoolhouse, Grocery store, Cottage house and Bank.  All life- sized doll houses were designed for free imaginative play.

TGIM – (Thank Goodness It’s Monday) special events planned for our Nursery, PreK and Kindergarten campers to help to welcome them back to camp after a long weekend.

TRIANGLE BALL – New to HCDC!  A fun beach and field game.

Camp Games for a Cause

May 24th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

This past weekend, the TLC Family of Camps took part in an awesome charity event at Columbia University - Camp Games for a Cause!  Over 30 different camps in the tri-state area, represented by their camp staff, camp alumni and camp families participated in friendly competition while raising money for a wonderful cause - SCOPE.  In this, it’s inaugural year, Camp Games for a Cause raised over $34,000 for SCOPE, helping to send under-privileged inner-city kids to summer camp!

We had about 25 young alumni & staff members from the TLC family show up to compete in some favorite camp games such as gaga, volleyball, dodgeball, and a dance competition where Ross Lazerowitz from Timber Lake posed as Justin Beiber!  The day finished with a perennial camp favorite (and mass chaos!) – an Apache relay!  Although there was a valiant effort by all, the TLC Family of Camps team came in 2nd place, but that just means that next year we will be going for the gold!

Packing for Camp

May 19th, 2011. Posted by HCDC Insider.

With just 40 days left until the start of summer 2011, most parents are focusing their concerns on the seemingly overwhelming task of collecting the clothing and other “necessities” needed for their child’s summer at camp.  Readying for camp usually boils down to accumulating, labeling, and packing an inordinate amount of items deemed vital to the production of a successful summer.  But are parents really “packing” the right things?  Are they really preparing themselves and their children to get the most and the best out of a great summer camp experience?

On some levels, not much has changed in the forty years since my father packed me up for my first summer as a camper at Timber Lake Camp.  Yet, times surely have changed and so have parental expectations.  My father was content in the hope of getting me back in one piece.  Parents today have much higher aspirations for their child’s camp experience, commensurate, I suppose, with the higher tuition now demanded.  Today’s parents should expect more than the obvious; safety and fun.  They should look for real growth in their child.  The first step in assuring it, is “packing” correctly – preparing properly for the camp experience.
